COMMISSIONED BY City Gallery Wellington

Olaf Nicolai, Blond, 2003 installation for several weeks at a hairdresser’s shop courtesy Galerie
EIGEN + ART Leipzig/Berlin
Olaf Nicolai works across many media (sculpture, printed matter, posters, neon, wall paintings etc.), re-viewing and re-working objects, images and texts that are part of our visual culture. His investigations respond strongly to contexts of production, consumption and the status afforded to objects or images within different geographical and cultural environments. He works across gallery-based and public realm projects.
Previous temporary works in public space include Blond, 2003 where he established a barber shop in Tilburg, The Netherlands, lasting several weeks where a professional hairdresser dyed customer’s hair blond free of charge, subject to the customers agreeing to be documented before and after the treatment.
Ritornello, 2005 installed for Belonging, Sharjah Biennial 7, in Sharjah, United Emirates consisted of many clotheslines strung across the street, pegged with clothing bought from residents of Rome and Naples.
In Welcome to the >Tears of St. Lawrence<, 2005 a poster and booklet project mounted as part of the Venice Biennale, 2005, Nicolai announced the astrological phenomenon of a shower of falling stars as an exhibition contribution, with information about and instructions how best to see the stars.
Olaf Nicolai was born in 1962 and lives in Berlin, Germany. He is represented by Galerie Eigen + Art, Leipzig and Berlin.
